We are pleased to welcome you at the 14th International Echinoderm Conference that will be held from August 20th till 24th, 2012, in Brussels, Belgium.

International Echinoderm Conferences are held every 3 years in different continents alternating between Europe, America and Australasia. They gather together experts and young researchers working in all fields of echinoderm biology and paleontology from all over the world. Plenary lectures, oral communications as well as posters sessions will allow to present recent discoveries and share opinions in a enthusiast and friendly atmosphere. We wish this conference to fulfill this goal for the spiny world of Echinoderms.

The Conference is organized by academics of three Belgian universities in which echinoderm research has been conducted for several decades, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Université catholique de Louvain and Université de Mons. The Conference will take place in the prestigious buildings of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Belgium, situated in the middle of downtown Brussels.

Sample Abstract

Nervous control of luminescence in Ophionereis schayeri (Ophiuroidea, Echinodermata)

Mallefet J.1, Renard J1. and O' Hara T.2
1. Marine biology laboratory, Catholic University of Louvain, 3 Place Croix du Sud, B-1348 Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Email: Jerome.mallefet@uclouvain.be
2. Invertebrate dept. Victoria Museum, 3001 Melbourne, Australia.

Among echinoderms, luminescence control mechanisms have been mainly studied in the ophiuroid class. Initial researches performed on Amphipholis squamata and Amphiura filiformis suggested the preponderance of cholinergic control mechanisms. Within the framework of a comparative study of ophiuroids luminescence, a research program was developed on Ophionereis schayeri , a common Australian luminous brittle star. Results show that the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the main neurotransmitter involved in light emission. GABA triggers light emission through the activation of GABAB receptor's sub-type located on the membrane of the luminous cells. Nevertheless, acetylcholine, induced a weaker luminescence probably by muscarinic cholinergic receptors. Furthermore, GABA, besides occupying the role of main neurotransmitter, seems to act as positive neuromodulator of the cholinergic response. Results of this research reinforce the idea that many neurotransmitters and neuromodulators are involved in ophiuroids luminescence control.
